Painting is my existence. Working late into the night, I am in a trance,
one hand moves the paintbrush over the surface the other holds the photograph.
For hours I meditate in this way and slowly a portrait appears in front of me.
Sometimes I am amazed at the results, the paint seems to flow so effortlessly
creating portraits with exceptional likeness.
I haven’t always been a realist
painter. Seeing the work of Andrew Wyeth's was the turning point. Wyeth’s
portraits are stunning and I knew immediately that I wanted to create realistic
captivating portraits. In the past two years my portraits have continue to
improve.
Unlike Wyeth’s, my canvas are often filled with a large face with a
distinctive emotion. I enhance these moods by creating visual context that
integrates and reflects the essence of the individual, resulting in a richer
image.
| One work titled,“Say....., ” 2004, is an example of this integration.
The subject of the piece is smiling a big toothy smile, and behind him is a wall
of many cheeses. He is cheesing! His expression suggests the environment and
supports the playful, irrelevant quality expressed in the individual’s face.
In another painting, titled “Lady Nimbostratus,” the subject is looking off to
right with a gloomy expression upon her face. Behind her lies storm clouds
and a full moonuggesting troubles in the weather. The subject’s appearance
and the atmosphere surrounding her feed off of one another’s ambiance
creating a melancholy painting I strive to deliver portraits with exceptional
likeness, astounding emotions and unique concepts.
